Name:Elijah
Birthdate:Jun 15
Location:Mystic Falls, Virginia, United States
Background: [Warning, contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries. Also, it's *severely* truncated...] Elijah was born 1,000 years ago to Viking parents, Mikael and Esther, moving when he was young to a small village in what would later become Virginia. When his youngest brother was killed by local werewolves, his mother - a powerful witch, turned her husband and remaining five children (Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, Kol and Rebekah) into vampires. She only meant to make them strong and fast enough to stay safe from the wolves, but they were so much more. Unfortunately, with strength and immortality came the lust for blood.

While Esther was able to counteract some of the effects of the spell—allowing them to walk in the sun—she could not fix it all. Worse, the bloodlust revealed that Elijah’s brother Niklaus was the product of her affair with a werewolf. Knowing that as a hybrid he would be near indestructible and able to sire a race like him, Esther cursed him and bound his werewolf side.

Klaus killed her and blamed Mikael, who spent the next 1000 years hunting him. Elijah and Rebekah believed Klaus, and swore their loyalty to him. Elijah committed himself to helping Klaus break the curse, but for it they needed a doppelganger of the girl they had both loved—the girl whose blood bound the curse.

They found Katerina Petrova in 1492, and sought to use her to break the curse, but Katerina escaped and became a vampire. Fed up with his brother’s machinations and manipulation, Elijah eventually left Klaus and Rebekah. He lived mostly in peace until Klaus told Elijah he had neutralized their other siblings with special daggers that can harm Originals, then dumped them in the sea. Elijah vowed vengeance.

He thought he would have it when a new doppelganger was found—Elena Gilbert. Elijah convinced Elena to help him break the curse and planned to kill Klaus when he was weakest. Elena agreed, risking her own life to save her friends and family, but as Elijah started to kill Klaus, his brother revealed their family wasn’t gone. He promised to reunite Elijah with them, but betrayed him, neutralized him and put him in a coffin.

When Elijah was revived a few months later, he worked with Elena’s friends to stop Klaus, and revived the rest of his family. However, his mother returned from the dead and tried to fix what she’d done—to destroy her family and through them all vampires everywhere. Elijah was able to stop her, but Finn and his bloodline were destroyed by Elena’s friends. Esther came back again and turned Alaric Saltzman into a vampire with the power to kill the rest of them.

Elijah tried to take Klaus and go, to save Elena (whose life was bound to Alaric’s), but Alaric staked Klaus before Elijah could. Grieving and desperate, Rebekah killed Elena, killing Alaric, too. It is from this point—thinking both Klaus and the girl he cared for more than he would admit are dead—that Elijah enters the City.

Personality: According to others, Elijah is an honorable man and the moral one amongst his family. That is, indeed, how he likes to see himself. He does not make promises he cannot keep (excepting for radical changes in circumstances), but he is very careful what he promises, choosing his words carefully. He is utterly loyal to his family, even when they misbehave, and he is one of the few people able to curb their more destructive tendencies. His eldest brother was neutralized for 900 years and his father hunted them for 1,000, so he has become the head of the family and he takes that very seriously. While he tries not to hurt any innocents, his family’s safety always comes first. His own near hypocrisy in this was pointed out to him recently by his mother—that he aims to be so moral, but he’s killed and maimed and tortured when it suits him. He can’t argue with her—when it suits his aims, he has done all those things. But they are not his base nature—he does not kill or hurt anyone aimlessly, but solely because it is “necessary” for whatever his goal. He regrets the harm he causes, but he’d do it again, usually. Having recently been forced to acknowledge he isn’t as “good” as he’d like to think, he is struggling with his view of himself.

He is highly intelligent, methodical and organized. While, like all vampires, he feels deeply, he is very good at controlling that emotion, occasionally coming across as remote from any human feeling or experience. The reserve breaks, though, sometimes, generally when the emotional stressor rises high enough, and underneath we see a man who cares almost too much, who wants nothing but peace for his family and to protect those he loves—and while he claims he doesn’t believe in love, that is so far from the truth as to be laughable.

Touch and straightening things calms him. He likes order and his own emotions worry him with their lack of tidiness. Decisions made from emotion are impulsive, and Elijah likes to be deliberate.

He loves learning, loves books, has kept up with the times through them, and is quite comfortable moving in the modern world, even being current with slang and textspeak, though he’d never use them except ironically. He has a very dry sense of humor that slips out when you least expect it. He admires humanity greatly, and values compassion and honor and sacrifice in those around him. He takes betrayal very seriously—but will forgive it where he loves, even as he struggles to forgive himself. If he doesn’t love, though, betrayal leads to vengeance. When he is wronged, or someone hurts his family, he is capable of all-consuming vengeance. When he puts his mind to something, he gets it done.

However, there’s a softness underneath all the deliberate purpose, an easy charm, a shy looking for connection, whenever he actually lets down his walls.

Physical Description: 5'11, medium brown hair that is generally well styled and considered by some to be very nice, dark brown eyes. Elijah is generally to be seen wearing well tailored suits, though he sometimes dresses down in just a pair of slacks and a nice button down, and might, someday, go so far as to trade in the slacks for jeans. Still, he prefers to be well groomed and well dressed to go along with the well spoken.

Special Skills: Elijah is an Original vampire--one of the first family from which all vampires come in his world. As such, he has superior speed, strength, reflexes and senses. He also has accelerated healing, and he is far more durable than other vampires, because of his status as an Original--very little can really do much damage to him. As for mental abilities, he is capable of mind compulsion on humans, vampires and werewolves, bending them to his will. He can tell when someone has taken vervain to get around the compulsion (though if they have done so, he can’t do anything about it until it is out of their system). He is also capable of dream manipulation -- he can produce or manipulate dreams, give someone nightmares, distort what they are dreaming, etc. As opposed to younger vampires, he is less impaired by most things--he can come back form being staked by anything but a stake made from a particular tree, though even a regular stake will neutralize him for several hours; he finds the sunlight uncomfortable without his daylight ring to protect him, but it won’t kill him; ditto fire--not fun, but he’ll recover. He can be dessicated--drained of blood--by magic and neutralized that way, or by a silver dagger dipped in the ash of the tree that can kill him. Magic can also be used to incapacitate him, or theoretically kill him, though no witch in his world is strong enough to do that without killing herself in the process. Vervain can stop him from compelling anyone and it does burn him--but he recovers far faster than non-Originals and it doesn’t do more than annoy him with the burning.

Canon Point of entry: End of Season 3

Warning: This journal *will* contain material of a sexual nature, and likely violence. Minors stay away. Mun and muse are both well over 18 (though muse far moreso. ;-D)
