Halloween Fun (For
havenosecrets)
Elijah wasn't convinced that going to the Grill was the best choice he and Jenna could make, but it was Halloween and there was a party, and she needed to feel like there was some normalcy left in her life, changed as it was. Maybe Ric would stay away and they could avoid the awkwardness all together.
His luck really hadn't been that great, lately, though.
And the knowledge that Stefan was back in town didn't help.
Nevermind Rebekah, if that rumor was even true.
Klaus was gone, and Elijah had avoided him and Jenna was safe, so the worst was surely over, yes?
Maybe his luck was changing.
So, it was, that he put on the costume he'd picked out--Victorian elegance with sweeping long coat, leather waistcoat, goggles on his top hat and clockwork pieces dangling. He'd discovered Steampunk and he was in love. The science fiction element added to the era of clothing he'd always loved best was an impossible draw, even if he felt it was a little silly to get all excited about it. He hadn't been excited about anything in a long time.
...Except he was, admittedly, really excited about going out with Jenna, even if maybe it was a bad idea. He didn't belong here. Maybe he never would. But with her...maybe he could find a way toward some sort of sense of it for a little while, at least.
Finally dressed, he headed to her place, pausing on the porch and hesitating just a moment before ringing the bell and hoping Jenna would be the one to answer and not Elena.

"Whiskey." She answered him with a warm smile. "What are you having?"
no subject
"Whiskey, as well, I think," he said, leaning in to brush a kiss over her temple. He leaned against the bar, flagging down the bartender and ordered them both a glass of whiskey.
A sense of another presence drew his attention while they waited, and he turned to find himself staring into a highly displeased pair of blue eyes.
"Damon." He shifted back to Jenna, arm sliding back around her a little more possessively.
no subject
She knew he wasn't going to be pleased to see Elijah there and probably more because of the fact that Damon and Ric were good friends. Glancing sideways, she looked for her ex-boyfriend but saw that Elena was quickly making her way towards them instead.
no subject
Elijah reached for the delivered whiskey, handing one to Jenna and taking a sip of his own. "I heard there was a party."
"You never struck me as the party type."
"You never bothered to get to know me well enough to find out."
Klaus had run off with Damon's brother. Elijah was sorry for that, but he wasn't really feeling particularly generous to the Salvatore brothers, no matter how sorry he might be for what had gone down.
no subject
"Damon." Elena joined the group, keeping her voice soft even as it held a note of warning for the Salvatore to behave. She looked a bit uneasy as she studied everyone for a second before offering a tight smile to the Original. "Hello, Elijah."
Then she looked at her aunt. "I like your outfit, Jenna."
"Thank you." Jenna managed a small smile, sipping her drink again as she looked at Damon and Elijah once more.
no subject
"Isn't that just cozy," he muttered, waving at the bartender to get him a drink.
Elijah gave Elena an answering smile, just as tight, though he didn't move his arm from around Jenna. "Elena."
"Why?" Damon asked, turning away from the bar to face them, shooting Elijah a glare, before fixing his gaze and the question on Jenna. "He let us down, and let Klaus go."
Clearly the fact that if Elijah hadn't done that, he'd be dead wasn't forefront in his mind.
no subject
Jenna arched a brow at Damon. "Why would anyone invite someone out somewhere, Damon?" She asked, sarcasm rich in her tone. Then her voice dropped to a lower tone as she glanced around, not wanting anyone to overhear them. "As for the rest, this really isn't the place to talk about what happened."
no subject
And he couldn't begrudge them their anger.
"Ric's supposed to be here." Damon didn't respond to the rebuke, but he didn't say anything else that might be overheard and get them in trouble.
That made Elijah flinch a bit inwardly. He knew Ric was never going to be a comfortable topic, and it would appear now he'd lied yet another time. He had said, after all, that he wasn't after Jenna. "We can go," he murmured to her, softly, though he knew Damon would still hear him.
no subject
Even as Elijah told her that they could leave, she felt conflicted. A part of her wanted to agree because perhaps it would be easier on them all if they did but a part of her was annoyed. Annoyed that they should be made to feel they had to hide away and that everyone just seemed to expect it.
"He's not here right now." Either way, Ric would hear about her being there with Elijah, she was sure of that much. After she drained the glass, she placed it sharply on the bar.
no subject
He may have failed them, but being with Jenna, so long as she wanted, was not wrong. They were not doing anything wrong. And she needed to be his main concern.
"I heard my sister was in town."
Damon rolled his eyes. "Oh, yeah. She's a treat."
Elijah's lips curved slightly in a bit of a smile. Rebekah was...Rebekah.
no subject
"Klaus had her stay behind to watch Tyler." Elena frowned, somewhat worried over the idea. She had seen the way Rebekah looked at Tyler and that left Elena concerned about Caroline.
"Why did he leave?" Jenna finally asked with a frown.
no subject
"Tyler's our newest member of the hybrid freak community," Damon said, not noting that Elijah's eyes darkened a little at that. Whatever else Klaus was, whatever he'd done--he was Elijah's brother and the lack of acceptance for what he was--through no fault of his own--was what had started all of this.
He didn't follow the urge to rip Damon's heart out, though he tensed some beside Jenna.
"Yes, why leave then?"
Damon smirked. "Because I told him Katherine had found Mikael."
Which pretty much made the bottom feel like it had fallen out from under Elijah. If Katerina had woken Mikael...his heart ached a little for the girl he'd once loved. No good could have come of it for her, let alone what was coming for them.
"You're all fools."
no subject
Jenna didn't even want to think about it if he was.
no subject
Elijah didn't rise to the bait, just shaking his head. "Mikael would happily kill all of you, simply for existing, or for getting in his way."
"I don't intend to get in his way if his way is headed toward your brother."
Elijah sighed. "Mikael considers anyone in his airspace in his way, sometimes."
no subject
Which sounded reasonable enough but Jenna knew that it wasn't that easy for Elijah to hear even if he had agreed that there was possibly no other way. "Are we absolutely sure that he's the best and only way?" She asked with a little frown.
no subject
He reached for his new drink, fingers curling around it. "But, don't worry. He's only been trying to kill Klaus for a thousand years. I'm sure he'll leave you all alone until then, at least."
no subject
"There must be a way we can reason with him."
"What if there's not, Elena?" Jenna asked with a soft frown. "Elijah is right. What if he comes here, kills Klaus and then comes after the rest of us?"
no subject
"You're not being helpful," Damon pointed out, frowning.
"My help isn't really something you've ever wanted or welcomed," Elijah rejoined.
"Yeah, well. Your plan sucked. And you didn't even follow through."
Elijah couldn't argue with that--he should have killed Klaus. "Would you kill Stefan if saving him could ensure Elena's safety? ...Would you kill him even if it meant her death?"
"You swore you would. That you could."
"He has my family--all of my siblings--held hostage. I couldn't consign them to eternal death, if there was a chance to save them."
"How's that working out for you?"
For a moment, Elijah looked like he'd very much like to slam another pencil into Damon's neck.
no subject
"Hey, guys." Caroline appeared on the edge of the gathering with a bright smile that was strained at the edges, mainly because she was forcing the cheerful look. "I know things are really stressful at the moment but this is supposed to be a party..."
"Right, maybe this is something we should talk about later." Elena reached out, touching Damon's arm even while she remained focused on Elijah. "And I would like to." She hoped he would understand that she wanted to talk to him, perhaps privately.
"That might be the best idea." Jenna nodded, still looking at Damon.
no subject
Damon looked vaguely annoyed at the interruption, but he shifted a little closer to Elena at her touch, almost instinctively, though he returned Jenna's look steadily, not flinching away from the disapproval. As far as he was concerned, he was in the right here, for once.
Elijah glanced between the teenager girls before focusing on Elena and nodding slightly. "Later is fine." If they were all still alive. "If we're done here, then, I'd like to dance with Jenna."
no subject
"You promised me a dance too." Elena reminded Damon though who knew if she had actually asked him or not.
"Good, everyone get out and have fun!" Caroline flashed them all with a bright smile, pleased. She was convinced they all needed to have fun and to make memories, all that jazz.
Jenna refrained from rolling her eyes in slight amusement though relaxing was hard at the moment. Still holding Elijah's hand, she nodded to the dance floor. "Ready?" Or she wondered if he wanted another drink.
no subject
Elijah held his gaze for a moment, then looked at Jenna with a smile. "I'm ready."
no subject
"Good." Jenna nodded, smiling back. "Let's go."
Moving out onto the dance floor, Jenna looked at Elijah. "Are you okay?" She asked softly, turning to face him.
no subject
Elijah, in the meantime, moved with Jenna, wrapping his arms around her when they got to the floor and focusing his attention on her, though part of him was half looking for Rebekah.
"I'm fine," he said, sliding a hand up to cradle her jaw. "I'm sorry all of this got in the way."
no subject
"At least we can enjoy ourselves for a little while, right?" She leaned into his touch.
